LOCAL BANKS VERSUS LONG DISTANCE CREDIT CARD ISSUERS
Your decision to deal with a local bank over a long distance
credit card issuer should be based on a couple distinct
factors. First, a local bank may lack 24-hour customer
assistance. This can be important if you frequently travel.
Plus, they may not offer the travel "perks" of a larger bank
card issuer. Also, local banks may not provide the larger
credit lines offered by long-distance issuers.
And it may be harder to qualify for a local bank's card.
These are the down sides posed by a local bank's lack of
financial resources. Remember, a small local bank may only
issue 4,000 cards while a larger, long-distance issuer may
issue five to 18 million credit card accounts. The
advantages of dealing with a small bank, although fewer, are
lower interest rates and more personalized service.
The disadvantages of using a small bank are the advantages
of dealing with a large bank card issuer. When dealing with
a large, long distance credit card issuer, it's usually
easier to qualify, the credit lines are higher, they offer
more travel services and 24-hour, toll-free customer
assistance. The disadvantages are higher interest rates and
fees, and the "what's your account number" type of customer
service.
